OMGhee! The Easiest Way to Make Ghee in Your Instant Pot
Did you know your Instant Pot doubles as a slow cooker? Yep, and here’s why that’s awesome—some ceramic slow cookers have tested positive for lead (yikes!), but the Instant Pot’s stainless steel insert keeps things worry-free. Plus, it heats up way faster than a traditional slow cooker, and the lightweight pan makes pouring your golden ghee into jars a total breeze.
Why Make Your Own Ghee?
Making ghee at home is a no-brainer—it’s cheaper, tastier, and so easy. I use Rumiano organic grass-fed butter from Azure Standard, but if you have a Whole Foods or other natural store near you, try Maple Hill Butter, Organic Valley, Truly Grass-Fed, or another organic, 100% pasture-raised, grass-fed butter.
And if you’re wondering, wait, isn’t ghee dairy?—technically, yes. But since ghee is just pure butterfat with all the milk proteins removed, many people who avoid dairy (casein) can tolerate it just fine.
How I Use Ghee
This liquid gold is my go-to for:
✔ Frying eggs
✔ Baking
✔ Roasting squash
✔ Butter-slathering muffins (yum!)
Bonus: Ghee has a higher smoke point than butter, making it a healthier choice for frying. Plus, I’m all about adding more animal fats to my diet to support my adrenals and nerves.
Here’s my my super simple Instant Pot ghee recipe!!
Unwrap butter and place in Instant Pot, leaving uncovered (you want the water to evaporate)
Plug in Instant Pot - Here’s the Instant Pot I used
Press the "Slow Cook" button (on the bottom left if you have the Duo-60)
Press the "-" button below the time once to set it to 3:30
Wait. In about 10 minutes, the butter will be liquid (you can sit and watch it in all its golden glory the whole time, or go do something else!)
You can set a screen (like this) or cloth over the top to keep anything out, if you'd like, but it's not necessary. Just don't cover the pot, you want the steam to get out!
When the timer is done and after the ghee is cooled, or whenever later in the day you get around to it, take out the metal bowl from the Instant Pot. The melted butter will have formed a crusty top layer and solids will also be settled on the bottom of the pot.
Set up some wide mouthed jars on the counter - These 16 oz canning jars work great
Put a funnel into one of them, with a nut milk bag or cheesecloth over the top of the funnel.
Pour in the golden goodness, collecting the solids in the cloth or bag. Don't overflow the jar! Repeat until all oil is filtered.
Toss out the solids.
Refrigerate to solidify, or leave on the counter. Store the extra jars in the fridge or freezer until ready to use. ENJOY!
